Thanks for all the answers... 2 follow-ups now...
1) was it the correct call by the officials? did our coaches really think it was incorrect? or just challenging as a hope or a prayer because it was a big 3 points?
2) was it an error by gaj to be caught on the bottom? i just looked up more about that rule and saw videos from some of the matches that led to it being instituted and read about how some wrestlers used it to wrestle defensively. but it didn't look to me like gaj was being defensive, but it seemed like he was trying to be aggressive just got caught on the bottom. so how does one be aggressive but not get caught on the bottom?

Time for my yearly ignorant wrestling-viewer post where I need your help...
in the Gaj match, it often seemed like he was making moves and had control over Lamer but he never scored any points, and then Lamer got that 3 point score which our coaches unsucessfully challenged. How did Lamer get 3 points there when he was being held the whole time and never really on top?

Thanks for all of the feedback...
as a novice wrestling fan, I did not know all of the nuances as to why you would select certain positions, as most of the matches I've watched the person on bottom seems to always get out and get a point. But I liked reading everyone's reasons on here why you would consider going neutral, especially depending on the opponent and how much time is left and riding time, etc. That all makes a lot of sense, and will help me understand other matches in the future! Thanks everyone!

Can someone explain why down 1, Lewis chose neutral (like previous match)?
Don't most guys who choose down get 1 point for escaping fairly easily? So then he'd be tied with a possible riding time advantage? I'm not sure I understand the strategy of neutral.

i watched that match last year
and I didn't understand then when BA had Haynes on his back at the beginning and then there was that really long review where our coaches challenged but points weren't given at the end of round 1. I thought BA had that match won last year. As someone who doesn't understand much wrestling, I certainly didn't understand all of the scoring in that one.
This year, I thought he was in good shape this time working back from 0-5 back up to 5-5 only to have that fall happen. đ

Thank you.. that makes a lot of sense...
I was wondering why some "near fall" points were 2 and others 3... now it makes sense. So anytime a wrestler is on his back and both shoulders touch for a second at the same time, it's a pin? That certainly makes sense to why it happened so fast on BA. He was on his back a lot earlier in the match but always trying to wiggle around, I assume to make sure both shoulders weren't down. This time when he got rolled over I guess there wasn't space to wiggle out quickly enough.

Can someone explain to a novice...
This board has helped me (a novice female with no wrestling experience) understand some wrestling things before so I'm hoping you all can help again. I've been watching the NCAA matches all week and I don't understand what actually constitutes a pin (fall). Sometimes like with BA, it happens fast, there's no counting, it's just over. And other times a wrestler seems trapped and the referee is counting but the person gets out of it. Why count sometimes?

that was brutal. so many matches tonight came down to last few seconds.
OSU knew how to close and our guys didn't. consistently across the board, they were going for takedowns and we were just trying to hold on.

So it seems like VT needs to start getting bonus points...
if we want to climb the team standings and make any headway against some of the programs at the top.

Can someone explain to this novice watcher how the team scoring works?
I see VT has 13 points so far as a team... but I thought you got 3 pts for a decision, and I thought we had already won a handful of matches in the 1st and 2nd rounds... so I think I don't understand it quite right...
