Former VT pitcher Packy Naughton announced his retirement today from MLB.
He's been through a lot, including multiple elbow surgeries.
Per a news report, Naughton suffered the third left elbow UCL injury of his career in April 2026 during a minor league comeback attempt and underwent surgery in June. The 29-year-old has decided against rehabbing with an intent to pitch again and instead will close the book on his baseball career. Naughton posted a 4.98 ERA and 1.51 WHIP over parts of three major-league seasons. He pitched most recently for the St. Louis Cardinals, and previously for the Angels. He was selected by the Reds in the 2017 MLB draft.

He rehabbed all last season after TJ surgery in 2024.
Had a good spring 2026 with STL. His ERA was 1.29. Then injured yesterday on his third pitch of the season at AAA. That is tough.
He pitched for VT 2015-2017.

Interesting that VT shot just .308 for 3-point attempts on the season.
That's missing 7 out of every 10 3-point shots.

Schutt has actually been rather consistent over time. Some stats inside.
Last season he shot .356 on 3s, making 57 of 160.
This season he is at .400 on 3s, making 62 of 155. In past six games since Duke forward, for example, he is at the same .400 percentage, going 8-20.
I was surprised to see on the ACC leader board that for the season to date, only 13 ACC players have averaged more made-3s per game than Schutt. Schutt is at 2.07 made per game across 30 games and is tied for 14th.
FYI, only two ACC players average three or more 3s made per game, although they have taken far more attempts than Schutt.
Schutt's shooting accuracy on 3s this season compares favorably to the upper echelon of the ACC's 3-point shooters. Schutt does not meet the minimum per game to be listed among the ACC leaders who have taken around 200 3-point shots, but of the ACC leaders, only four players have a higher 3-point shooting percentage than Schutt's.

VT was picked by ACC coaches to finish 12th. Why the surprise?
Eleven teams were deemed to be better than the Hokies, and that assessment was before you factor in the number of games lost to the Tyler and Lawal injuries.

At 22 games into the season, VT women rank 13th in the ACC for overall shooting and 14th in three-point shooting. It is what it is.

Interesting how Wake's 21 turnovers impacted its game.
Wake took only 51 shots for the game after its 21 turnovers which included 11 steals by VT.
VT shot it 71 times (11 turnovers).
Each team had 74 possessions.

VT has the third-most made free throws among ACC teams.
Not as "atrocious" as alleged on this board.
For the season, VT has made 327 FTs, ranking just behind Stanford's 334 and Cal's 330.
VT ranks seventh in the ACC for FT percentage at .725 after making 28 of 32 vs Notre Dame. Eleven ACC teams are making FTs at a lower percentage than VT.
The Hokies rank third in FT attempts, with 451, and trail only Stanford (463) and Duke (456).
Cal leads the ACC in FT percentage, followed by SMU and Louisville.
Ben Hammond is fifth in ACC FT percentage, .856.

VT's 27 of 31 made FTs was rather elite.
To complain about making 27 of 31 free throws really shows no perspective of how good that performance was.
Making 27 of 31 is .871, which, if applied across all games year to date, would lead the nation! The top FT-shooting team is St. Mary’s (CA), at 80.67, which is the only team at 80% or better.
So, .871 would easily lead the ACC across all games. The top free throw-shooting team in the ACC (Cal) is at .794.
VT is at .718 for the season, presently ranking 8th in the ACC, just above the mid-line in an 18-team conference. VT is a fraction of a percentage point ahead of Duke’s .718.
Last season, VT shot .714. The VT 2021-22 team that won the ACC shot .751 and was third in the league for FT percentage for all games, and second in the then-20 conference games.

Brooks didn't recruit enough difference makers in his first years.
Kenny Brooks didn't have a winning conference record at Virginia Tech until his fourth season at VT. And no NCAA appearance until the fifth season.
His first three seasons, VT finished 11th, 9th, 10th in the ACC.
Once he established the program he left the cupboard bare for his successor.
It's not going to get fixed in one recruiting class.

Hansberry fouled out in only two of 31 games last season at WVU.
He committed 65 fouls in 31 games, an average of 2.1 per game.

VT pitchers fanned 17 and gave up only 5 hits.
Pitching got it done tonight, as VT lineup had only one hit after the second inning.

VT is playing elite defense.
VT has committed only 15 errors in 33 games.
Two ACC teams have 40 or more errors. Nine have 30 or more. FSU (6th in RPI) has 39 errors. Duke (7th in RPI) has 32 errors.
VT (14th in RPI) leads the ACC in fielding at .982. UNC is second at .973 and has 25 errors.
Four Hokies are among the top 28 in ACC fielding. Five are in the Top 95 fielders listed by the ACC stats page. The entire VT infield + catcher are in the top 95.
VT has not committed an error in 21 of 33 games in 2025 and committed more than one error in only two games. (Worst was three in second-game loss in LSU series.
No surprise then that VT's ERA is second best in the ACC, at 2.50. Plus VT pitchers have a conference-leading 244 strikeouts and have given up the fewest extra base hits.
The Hokies have hit 60 homeruns in 33 games. Next is FSU with 53 in 38 games. FSU is tops in batting average, at .373. VT is seventh, at .320.

VT won on 57% FG shooting, which won't happen every night.
Had VT shot 45% (better than its season avg), for example, it would have meant 6 fewer field goals and at least 12 fewer points.

Last year's 12th place in the ACC resulted in a 5-13 record.
Not sure how that translates to expectations for win-loss record in an 18-team league, but clearly sub-.500.
Last year Clemson and BC tied for 12th at 5-13. Even 10th place was 7-11 for Virginia and GT.

ACC had 8 teams selected in both 2023 and 2024.
VT team is young and has to learn to play together and in a new system. Hokies may be around middle of the pack in 2024-25. Borderline to make it to the NCAAs this season, I think.

Wenzel did not shoot nearly as well as I thought
when I just reviewed the past season's stats.
In conference games Wenzel shot .353 from the field and .200 on 3s.
For all games she shot .386 and .306.

I disagree. Do not “play for one” on the road in the third inning
in that particular situation (tie game) if you don’t have to. And especially not when Addy Greene, the seventh-best hitter for batting average in all of the ACC, is at the plate with two runners on and no outs.
Why take the bat out of the hands of the best hitter on the team, batting .448, by asking her to bunt there and hand Bama an out if you don’t have to. Addy is also second on the team in slugging, first in on-base percentage, leads the team in walks. Favorable odds for an offensive inning. Let her work the count.
Let her swing, don’t give away an out. Play to score multiple runs at that stage of the game, especially on the road. There is no guarantee that a bunt would have been successful, or that a hit or rbi of some sort would have followed. It was the right decision at the time.

And of that, only 4 points off the first 16 VT turnovers.
Yet she suggests that VT's defense was no factor?

Poteat subbed in for Kidd with 7:48 left and played rest of the game.
Kidd did not re-enter. VT was up just 68-64 when Poteat entered the game. Defense held Clemson to 8 points rest of the way.

Our critic of VT’s “long ball coach” didn't comment after the 5-4 win.
After a derisive comment four days prior, the critic had nothing to offer after the five-run winning rally in which all the runs were driven in on two homers.

He would tell you his team leads the ACC in homeruns. Because it does.
VT leads the ACC in 2023 homeruns in both ACC games and all games.
Overall, VT has 87 homeruns in 49 games. The closest other team is Clemson, at 63 in 49 games.
In ACC games, VT leads the conference with 35 homers in 21 games. Duke is next, with 34 in 22 games. Notre Dame has 32 in 21 games.

Also in seven-inning appearances: 112 vs USF, 105 vs Nebraska, 115 vs Abilene Christian, 96 vs NC State game 1. Also, 121 in 8 innings vs Texas.
A couple of dropped foul flys by the defense behind her today led to increased pitch count.

Choice seats may be hard to come by for the NCAA women’s games at Cassell.
Brad Wurthman said at Blacksburg Sports Club on Wednesday that the NCAA requires a set-aside quantity of seats for the teams’ families, traveling parties, etc., that will take away the first 12 rows along both sides (apparently thru row L).
Then I saw that 1500 tickets (I think) are available for students , which I suppose takes up the broad end zone area that students usually occupy.
Brad said sold seats will be reserved. (I recall NIT men’s games here with open seating.) On Wednesday he said it was still to be determined whether an online purchaser will select actual seats or be assigned seats by the ticket system. (Selecting your seats yourself apparently slows the live online processing).
