Does he work a local job out in town, then coach in his spare time?
Does he get free tuition for grad school?

At VT, usually yes and no
I have had a former VT Swimmer and former VT Diver work for me in the past, while they still volunteered with the team. They received no tuition benefits.
Cornell being partially a private school, may be able to offer more tuition benefits, but I am not sure if that violates the NCAA definition of "volunteer."
