Question about retention: it will show my limited knowledge
We read about recruiting and top programs having good-to-great wrestlers in different weight classes. How do programs retain wrestlers who ate not wrestling/“starting”? My impression is that there ii essentially 1-2 starters per weight class. if someone is hurt or falters or gets a meet off, then you see another wrestler work. Correct me if my impression is wrong.
So if there are more wrestlers in the program, some are waiting their turn? Some are essentially going to be practice workers? How does that work?
So ultimately how do programs avoid losing wrestlers when they dont see themselves moving into active roles? Or are we seeing that with the portal now?
Thanks in advance

My understanding is it will help us remain a top 10 program but also help

I agree, it's going to hurt programs in lots of sports at lots of schools.

So, in theory, "backups" at some (even major) schools might leave

Yes, it's all personal preference, but typically we see wrestlers

Depends on the wrestler. Barraclough waited until his last year…
