Stats from ACC's relative to NCSU/ VT (Long post alert)
I think the following might be of interest:
Total takedowns in ACC Tournament:
NC State- 37 (22 total matches) 1.68 takedowns per match
VT- 37 (27 total matches) 1.37 takedowns per match
Total stall calls in ACC Tournament:
NC State- 10 (22 total matches) .45 stall calls a match
VT- 13 (27 total matches) .48 stall calls a match
For the tournament as a whole the action appears pretty equal (Slight edge to NCSU in takedowns, almost a wash in stall calls) However when you look at the head to head action between NCSU and VT things begin show quite a bit of disparity:
Head to head total takedowns (8matches):
NC State- 11 (1.37 per match)
VT- 3 (.38 per match)
Head to head total stall calls:
NC State- 4 (.5 per match)
VT- 3 (.38 per match)
If we include the NCSU vs VT dual and combine with head to head ACC's for a larger sample size we get the following:
Total takedowns:
NC State- 23
VT- 10
Total stall calls:
NC State- 9
VT- 9
Takedowns per stall call:
NC State- 2.55
VT- 1.11
From a tactics perspective relative to stalling with the lead it's interesting to look at who was tagged with stalling during a match while they were winning. (Again combining stats between dual and head to head ACC's for a larger sample size):
NC State- out of the 13 matches NCSU won they stalled with the lead 4 times (31%)
ACC's Camacho vs Flynn 4-2
ACC's Orine vs Latona 4-0
ACC's Jack vs Crook 14-6
Dual Camacho vs Flynn 5-1
VT- out of the 5 matches VT won they stalled with the lead 4 times (80%)
ACC's Stewart vs Fishback 8-5
Dual Henson vs Arrington 4-1
Dual Brady vs Fields 4-2
Dual Stewart vs Fishback 7-2
Couple of considerations:
-Takedowns are not always a perfect indicator of "action" but they are most likely the best indicator of controlled action in the neutral position
- Stall calls remain widely subjective, however assuming mass bias by a group of referees is probably not substantiated even though it can feel that way at times.
- There appears to be plenty of opportunity for double stall calls in the neutral position that could lead to "action"
All that being said, I think it's awesome to have two really solid programs in the ACC, and I hope that UNC, Virginia, and Pittsburg continue to develop over the next few years. (Afraid Duke is a lost cause) I think both NCSU and VT have guys who can legitimately win a National Championship this year. Arrington and Henson vs the field would be a great money line.

I don't think it will be the case this year. We've scored higher at NCAAs

Orine should get called for stalling on top. Refs allow that deep waist

Minor correction - Orine won again without getting a TD. Tough to swallow

Good post. NC State has a great team and, IMO, a decent shot at a podium
