Regarding the transport, if the extra guns were in his bag, unloaded (and potentially in the trunk), then there's no real issue there. That's exactly how he should be transporting them. I fully believe he was transporting them for the move, either as the first move or just hadn't removed the bag yet. He was announced as being hired on July 1. The arrest happened less than 3 weeks later. That timeline makes sense to me to be in the process of moving. It always comes out that having more than 1 gun is an arsenal, but 4 really isn't that many.
