in interviews Mekhi said he preferred folk over freestyle
Everything else I’m about to say is speculation, but I don’t think he ever fell in love with freestyle and taking the Olympic RS year may have contributed to more burnout over the course of his career. That said, I suspect his numerous injuries took the most significant toll.
