Why would he leave before the arrival of the new president?

One can imagine if the athletic department is run like the big business it is, he is acting solely in a basic administrative capacity until the new president arrives, where he announces his departure. My only question is whether he would serve until the replacement the new administration picks starts or tenders his immediate resignation.
