SB America has VT-Auburn as one of the games of the week
No. 11 Virginia Tech @ Auburn Where: Auburn, Alabama When: February 27-28 What’s it on: SECN+ What do we want to see: Virginia Tech is undefeated against SEC competition this season. However, its only two losses have come against unranked opponents, which adds intrigue to this two-game set with Auburn. Under co-head coach Chris Malveaux, the Tigers have showcased plenty of power, launching 30 home runs—good for a top10 mark nationally. Both teams bring dangerous offenses to the field, but the edge may lie with Virginia Tech’s pitching staff. Bree Carrico and Emma Mazzarone both boast sub-2.00 ERAs on the season thus far.

It's also a "Game to Watch" by D1 Softball
They actually used a picture of the Hokies celebrating in Georgia as their cover photo. It was their #2 Game to Watch this weekend: 2. Virginia Tech vs. Auburn — Pete D’Amour’s Hokies are 4-0 in true road games against SEC opponents this season, winning twice against South Carolina in week one and taking down Georgia twice in week three. The tough scheduling is paying off for Virginia Tech, who will make one final trek into SEC country for the year. They’re scheduled to play Auburn twice on the Plains and another win or two would give VT a solid postseason resume before their ACC slate even kicks off."

As Pete and staff presumed.
Show well in a challenging tournament season and build a resume for post-season.

BTW, I got a nice reply from Justin McLeod (D1 SB) yesterday
I appreciate the fact that he took the time to respond. While I don't necessarily agree with the logic of some of the voters, he did not owe me an explanation, and he still took the time to give me his thoughts. He also shared that he is planning to come to Salem next Thursday to catch some of the Hokie Invitational. He shared that D1 Softball had more than a dozen voters in their poll so he could only hypothesize the logic of the voters who had Georgia in front of VT. I thought that was fair and I appreciate him doing so. He comments was "I feel pretty safe in assessing that most of the voters gave Tech more credit for beating Georgia than they faulted Georgia for the losses. Jumping 12 spots in the rankings is no small thing.": "Georgia's Clearwater showing certainly helped bouy them...I have to think Georgia's pitchers being out helped contribute to them not getting faulted more than they did. It didn't keep VT from jumping up, but I feel like it was a factor in (Georgia) staying put. As I said at the start of the post, I don't have to agree with him, but I do better understand some of the voters' thought processes. And, as I said yesterday, Week 3 Polls don't matter very much in the overall scheme of things. Just win and everything will take care of itself. Let's Go Hokies!!!!

A lot of people would have just ignored you.

I can understand the reason for not penalizing UGA . . .
too much for not having all their players available, except for the fact that’s exactly what VT’s situation was in Charlotte. And we had a big drop in the polls. ** Edited by Chesapeake_Hokie at 2/25/2026, 2:40:42 PM

Not going to Clearwater or Cathedral City does disadvantage you some . . .
. . . in early polls (unless you're OK or TX). Of course, in the end these February polls are of zero importance.

I don't get why Duke went to BOTH premier tournaments.
I also feel like the Tech Softball program has proven itself to be a consistent-enough winner that it should get to participate in these tournaments more often. I'm not saying every year, but it has been quite a while since going to Clearwater. I'm not sure they've ever been to Mary Nutter.

Dodging VT?

I'm pretty sure there's no 'dodging' going on. Why not VT?
You'd have to ask Pete. I have no idea how selection occurs other than to assume ESPN controls Clearwater. They certainly want a few 'marquee matchups' but the fact that NC State, FAU and UCF were there this year says that there are other factors involved.
