Announcers today emphasizing the importance of pitchers changing speeds.
Have to do it against elite hitters. I hope Mazz is watching and then practicing it.

And from the chart Chip posted 92% of Lemley's pitches are the
same speed. And her off speed pitches are only about 10% slower.

10% slower is often slow enough. The problem is that 92% are the same speed
Only 8% or pitches are different. Then the question becomes can you read these out of her hand? Overall, when facing Em there's absolutely no reason to worry about the change. Just time her up and swing. It's a credit to her that she was as effective as she was through her career while throwing so many 'same-speed' pitches. My frustration was that she had four years to fix this and never really did. Had she done so VT might have made it to OKC. ** Edited by MidloHokie at 7/14/2025, 5:45:49 PM ** Edited by MidloHokie at 7/14/2025, 5:47:20 PM

I think it might be slow enough to get a hitter out ahead and
maybe foul it off. But, I don't recall her getting a hitter to strike out on one or making a hitter look bad on a swing and miss. Which is why I don't think they called that pitch from her very often. I had also hoped she could have developed a change she could throw more often. If she had done that, I agree that would have pushed her to another level.

That was the kryptonite for VT's hitters this year

I think the, just throw 70%, message landed end of year
so just keep the same approach, she’ll be more effective

Easier said than done. A change is a different pitch. There are several . .
. . . ways to throw an effective change but just slowing everything down is not one of them. Good hitters will read that very easily.
