Thanks for the kind comment. That's a REALLY Tough question
Remember I have only seen a couple of batting practices, one scrimmage, and two fall ball games, so this is a VERY, VERY limited perception.
At the end of Fall Ball, I'll try to do a story that includes some comments from Coach D'Amour, but for this very moment, I'll give it a shot.
NEWCOMERS:
*Teagan Thrunk has been really impressive. In the two fall ball games, the former Player of the Year in New Jersey has gone 3 for 5 with a Home Run. She absolutely looks ready for college and Coach D'Amour told D1 Softball that she could start at shortstop this year.
*Lyndsey Grein has looked impressive in the circle. She has thrown 4 scoreless innings with 9 Ks. To my untrained eye, she looks to be really poppin' it (I have actually ordered a pocket radar gun so I can define "poppin it...lol).
*Kylie Aldridge has looked comfortable behind the plate. Filling Mackenzie's Lawter's shoes will be a challenge, but I believe she can do it.
RETURNERS:
*You have to start with Emma Lemley. It looks like she has conquered the illegal pitch issue and has simply been unhittable in Fall Ball. I mean that literally: she has faced 18 batters and has struck out 16 of them (the other two popped out).
*One of my personal favorites - Kelsey Brown - has been on fire. She looks like the Kelsey Brown of 2021 when she hit .384 for the season and was 31-31 in stolen bases. She has batted leadoff in two of the fall ball games and has gone 5 for 7 and scored 4 runs. During batting practice Friday she took 9 swings slapping the ball before Coach Pete asked her to swing away. She proceeded to blast the next pitch over the fence and looked back at him a smiled.
*My final one might be a surprise to many - Redshirt sophomore Molly Jacobson. She has only pitched one inning in her VT career, but she has looked very good in Fall Ball. She has pitched a total of 7 scoreless innings giving up only 2 hits and striking out 8.
Again, this is a very limited exposure. No doubt I have missed notable performances both with newcomers as well as returners. BUT...I certainly like what I see.
Two more Fall Ball Chances:
Tuesday, October 25th vs. Radford
Friday, October 28th vs. Louisburg
Let's Go Hokies!!!!
