Not an excuse but something to remember
Mizelle - freshman
Foster - first year at P4 level
Abromavage - first year starting after barely having limited pinch-hitting duties last year
Rohs - Career .244 hitter than only got to .244 because she hit .285 this year.
Carrico - first year pitching
Layton - freshman first year pitching
We have one of the top offenses in VT history because it is a team of solid-to-very good hitters without having a true super star. Lynch might be the closest we have to a true superstar, but we don't have a player like a Cori McMillian in which 41% of her hits were HRs and 57% of her hits were doubles or HRs. We don't have someone who could change the complexion of the game with one swing 41-57% of the time (assuming runners might be!).
Abromavage and Lynch have the ability to exceed 20 hrs and 20 doubles next year, but someone like Nora has to take the next step. I think Chatfield hasn't take the full next step in terms of power. She has become a 14-15 HR/per year hitter and in two of her years, she has reached her HR total because she hit 3 in one game. I would love to have them spread out to impact more games :).
We have players who are likely under-rated and under-appreciated, whether it is Yaeger, Aldridge, or Castine. We have an offense that is hitting over .300 with 8 of our 9 regulars all hitting over .300. But that does not mean they can go through doldrums, a word that Pete used.
Right now, the offense is going through a stretch in which only 2-3 players are making an impact in any given game, starting with the UVA tournament game. That might be fine with the "maximize" your opportunities mindset. However, that can only work if the pitching holds teams at bad AND 2-3 players do produce runs. Against LSU, we had neither for one game. Just one game.
This team has shown the ability to bounce back. Whether or not we get out of the regional by winning 3 in and a row or not, I would be happy getting to tomorrow and taking at least one from LSU.
Next year will be even more insteresting than this year. We didn't know who would be the outfielders going into this year. Now, we will see who steps up to be a DP, 2B, and see how young players develop. Recognizing what we are though is that we are a strong , top 16 team whose sum might be better than the total of its parts? If we don't have several parts producing, we are vulnerable. How many times has this happened this year resulting in a loss? Very few.
