Part of the ball hits part of the plate, ring it up, and the black is part

of the plate. We were told doing hi school ball to call strikes, get the players swinging those bats. Balls and strikes are important but it's the base umpires who really move the game. The game is measured by outs so when a base ump calls an out, the game has moved closer to the end of the game. I've seen plenty of batters who swing at definite balls off the plate and gotten hits. Had one at Fluvanna High who swung like he was chopping wood at a pitch over his head and knocked it over the fence - first home run of his career. See the ball, hit the ball.
