Sites that are built for softball, seat 1000+, and having an infrastructure for bathrooms, ticket-taking, concessions, etc. are EXTREMELY rare outside of college venues. Heck, there are a small number of colleges that can adequately do that job. I have seen pro softball played on converted baseball fields with grass infields and temporary fences because most cities (including DC) really have nothing suitable. Converted fields make for a TERRIBLE product. Boston will be small, and far away for almost everyone, but moving from school to school has been the ACC’s plan for quite a bit. Until they change the strategy, we don’t really have much to complain about. It is what it is. Salem would be a decent non-affiliated option if the ACC was willing to make a change. It would help if Roanoke’s airport offered a better ability to fly direct to more locations. Boston, FSU, Cal, and Stanford would fly (3 of the 4 should regularly make the tournament). Notre Dame is a crappy drive to anywhere but Pitt, and may also ante up for a flight. Number of seats should ideally be in the 1000+ range, but is also somewhat overrated in the key criteria. In my experience, the ACC tournament doesn’t draw a big crowd like regionals and supers. While tickets for actual seats at Duke sold out, there were always empty seats. Most people come and go with “their team” with the rare softball junkie staying for all games. If the host team isn’t playing, stands tend to have a few hundred fans at best. BC fans don’t tend to travel well and they might not finish in the top 12. I’m not convinced that access to seats will be a problem there… it is just a matter of having to make a long drive or get on a plane.
