I've seen that up close with the pitcher in question having fingers swollen to small sausage size. It occurs in both softball and baseball pitchers. It can be transient or chronic. The fact is that collegiate softball pitchers are freaks of nature. Few survive the orthopedic stress without some minor or major injury over the course of their career.
