I like this for early season tournaments. A couple of caveats:

Both coaches would need to agree to play "extra innings" BEFORE the start of each game. It would not be required. In order to keep tournaments on time there would be 'drop dead' time limits for the 'extra innings'. You would have to leave it to the discretion of the coaches as to who played the extra innings. This is likely the only way the rules committee would agree to institute this option.
