From a pitcher's Dad perspective you earn that 'help' by throwing . .
. . . lots of competitive pitches. You don't waste pitches 2 balls off the plate. You, essentially, challenge the umpire. You won't get all the close ones but you'll get some and if your opponents aren't patient it will pay dividends.
