Understand that there is really no absolute standard for clocking . . .

. . . pitches. The technology varies from gun to gun. Obviously, the ball begins to decelerate as soon as it leaves the pitcher's hand. Different guns pick up the ball at different times and use different algos to 'average' the speed. Did Pickens throw 78+ . . . . seems so at least once. Same thing with Mazz throwing 75. Might have been clocked that fast but neither are approaching those speeds on regular basis. And remember, Cat Osterman regarded by many as the best pitcher ever, consistently threw 63 to 65. The physics are complicated but once you're throwing above 70 mph it becomes very difficult to spin it fast enough to create break. ** Edited by MidloHokie at 3/2/2026, 10:45:35 PM

Just saw an article about Tenn's K Pickens throwing 78.2 mph in a game, ...

Both of Pickens pitches were measured by Yackertech
VTsportscaster 03/02/26 11:37 PM ET
Yep. So comparing Picken's numbers to those measured other ways is invalid.
MidloHokie 03/03/26 06:33 AM ET
Not saying it's invalid but more accurate

Agree on your points for sure

How fast was Bahl clocked in that game?**
MidloHokie 03/03/26 06:34 AM ET
Honestly we weren't paying attention to Bahl's #s
VTsportscaster 03/03/26 08:54 AM ET
That's a great question for comparisons sake. Not sure on answer though**

Mazz said she'd been clocked in low to mid 70s

I am sure that's right. Control is worth more than speed. Same with golf.
