we have been down. The atmosphere will be even better with Franklin at VT. The last time Franklin played ND was one of the best playoff games ever IMHO. I think the media will be all for it, and cover it big time.

Wilderness for a few years ND knows the wilderness well. But with Franklin you stumbled upon a good coach. Damn good recruiting.

He gave Bob Davie a contract extension shortly after taking over as AD in 2000.
Davie went 5-6 the next year (2001) and was fired.
White then hired George O'Leary......
White then hired Ty Willingham (OMG) and later gave Charlie Weis a huge extension after only two seasons.
No one was upset when he left for the Duke job in 2008.
Rumor was that it was suggested to him.

Was always going to be a smaller class but there were a few guys I thought we had in the bag that are headed to bigger programs - Texas, A&M, Michigan, Miami. Ismael Camara looks like he'll be another whiff which sucks because we spent a lot of time on him. Spoke with a member of the staff last week who didn't seem too worried about it and said we'll just pivot and allocate more $ to the portal this offseason, but I don't know if that's supposed to be comforting or just coach-speak. One of the things that's paid off for us in the past has been planting seeds with blue chip DFW and Houston guys out of HS who circle back in portal a year or two later.

wouldn't an AD need to put forth a lot of effort to really screw things up there? I mean the entire Athletic Department is basically a self-sustaining train that doesn't require too much effort to keep it on the track.

Who produced two top-ten finishes in three years. Last time that happened at Tennessee was 1998-1999. Tennessee football was a dumpster fire for most of the 15 years before White was hired. And football is the only thing that really matters there.

time, the ADs still had success with fundraising, expansion of facilities, and even the consolidation of the men's and women's athletic programs. Fulmer is probably the only the AD in the group that was truly a failure and most Vols fans would agree he was never qualified for the position. His ego and influence led to John Currie being pushed out over bogus reasons because he wanted the job. FWIW Currie seems to be doing just fine at Wake and it is likely he would have had similar success if he had been allowed to remain at Tennessee.

Just not a fit at all. Tennessee fans went off the rails with the allegations against him to sink the hire, but that was a huge blunder by Currie.

experience with "big time programs," so that wouldn't have been an issue when it came to whether he could handle managing Tennessee's program and the pressure that came with it. I get the fans issue with his connection to the Penn State scandal. I do wonder though if some of that was due to them viewing him as a Yankee.

as the 1.0 version for a number of reasons. So I am not surprised that Schiano hasn't does as well the second time. Although his first time isn't as impressive as people may think. He was at Rutgers for 11 seasons and only had a winning season for 6 of them. Particularly when you consider the Big East Football Conference was a lot weaker when teams left the conference to join the ACC.

I guess people remember the 1 great season he had in 2006 and use that as the basis to judge his first tenure.

the fact that AD has a sustained revenue stream regardless of how individual HCs perform. You will have go back a few ADs to find the last AD at Tenn that really had to worry about the revenue stream drying up or the need for Tenn to revamp its booster club because it isn't donating close to its full potential. Tenn Athletic Department is at place where it can simply plug 'n play who sits in the AD chair while it continues to count those checks.
