For your viewing and consideration, revenue comparison of VT vs FBS
All revenue data is sourced from the Knight-Newhouse college athletics database. Data shown below is for the most recent public records for the 2024-2025 fiscal year. This is total revenue for the athletic department at each public school.
Edited because I forgot to turn off a filter and left off a couple of teams the first time.

than 24-25 numbers and it probably puts us in the top 10 right now.
Add in a new coach, a new AD who was personally recommended by Jimmy Sexton (the most powerful agent in college sports) specifically as a revenue generator, a new football CEO coming, and a new University President that the BOV is hiring with a clear mandate to compete at the top 10 level — and the trajectory here is hard to argue with.
The future is a lot brighter than that graph suggests IMHO.

So it is the most current verifiable information across all schools. Of course VT is starting to get more money, but others are increasing also. So the data has to be consistently updated across all schools to be useful. And for that purpose, this is the most current data that anyone outside of the athletic departments will have.

If there are others, it can’t be many, as like Virginia Tech you shot it from the rooftops, even if they are anonymous gifts.

paying attention can see that.
Revenue is a better metric today on being able to compete - a whole lot better than the academic rankings.
Even Memphis got a commitment for $25M a year from one private source. There are others as well, including KU.

invest. Instead of PE firms investing in sports, individuals and companies are looking to jump on board. Interesting times to say the very least.

if that model will work - and it gives locals a way of investing into the growing pie. A win win.

There are plenty of ways to spend more than the revenue you make. The below is just a snapshot of one fiscal year, but it clearly shows how some are aggressively spending.

Guess they think they should hold cash...do they not have any facilities that need upgrading?

very interesting. In my weak research, Louisville and Kansas always surprise me with their revenue or "worth", but they do not show up in your graphic as being particularly strong.
Just for chts and kicks, I thought you would be interested in the operating income graphic of the 2024 NFL season.

provides the skeleton to be fleshed out with discussion. It's the best starting point.
