A little about SMU that’s not been mentioned…
I used to live in Dallas and SMU is just not just Texas … many students are from the rich suburbs of Chicago and many other places in the Midwest. So the TV footprint is more than just Texas. Having said that, I do feel a little uncomfortable bringing these schools in that have so much more resources than we do. In the long term, I’m not sure I want theses camels getting their noses under our tent. 🥺 ** Edited by VPI63 at 8/24/2023, 1:44:08 AM

Meh. I live in Dallas. They are crazy
accepting a deal where they get zero in media dollars for 7 years.

How many fans do they put in their stadium, and how many at their bowls?
If you aren't generating massive television interest, you probably aren't worth the addition. Simple question, if SMU is so great, why didn't the SEC or B12 add them? If Stanford or Cal was really valuable, why didn't the B1X add them? I see a bunch of leftovers who are located very far away.

I’m looking long term.
The backers of SMU all live in Highland Park and in aggregate could buy half the state of Virginia. That’s why they can afford 7 years of no revenue. Recall they got the death penalty because these rich backers bought recruits to compete with UT. Don’t let these people in …. They will crush us in the long term.

George Dubeeyah Bush library is at SMU. 62 million adults voted for him
so expect a similar number of supporters when SMU games are televised. tic

yeah, I don't think it translates.

Good one!

SMU would have been next to last in attendance last year in the ACC.
about 400 more fans per game than Duke. Stanford would have finished just above SMU with about 4K more fans per game. Cal would have finished between BC and UVA at over 38K/game.

If the ACC wanted to guarantee it's next ESPN contract is even lower...
...just add those three.

No wonder ESPN isn't willing to give a substantial financial boost for...
...those schools. They are practically worthless when it comes to television interest.

There is value in the 9-10PM timeslots though...
a 10PM game between Stanford/Cal and any ACC team will do better ratings than whatever else ESPN would be airing on the ACCN at that time, or a 9PM game between SMU and any ACC team.
E
EDGEMAN
At best those will be on the ACCN, not ESPN
ESPN will load up that channel (and ESPN2) with SEC games, with the overflow going onto the SECN.
BROman Hokie BROman Hokie
Yep, that's what I said, but a game > a studio show on ACCN at 9-10PM...
Wake Forest at Cal on 10PM on ACCN is still a W for ESPN, and the network also has their ABC primetime spot to fill, so solid west coast match-ups, like ND/Clemson/FSU/Miami at Cal/Stanford at 10/10:30 would likely be on ESPN/ESPN2.

Yeah, there may be some short term gain since these schools will get
paid little to nothing, but what happens with the next contract? The networks will see a ton of games that nobody is watching. It's already bad, but this will be tons worse.

Yes! I really hope VT’s admin has a plan here
And not just voting ‘’yes’ for short-term gain or some case that helps the ACC. Only case I can see is that we are confident in a B1G/SEC invite or if that doesn’t work a B12 move. ACC with it most valuable properties replaced with these three schools is really bad viewership-wise.
reestuart reestuart
Yeah, unless VT is certain of a P2 invite at the end, this won't help a bit

Half their living alumni live in Dallas area. They only have around
135k total, so even if they get kids from all over, there aren’t enough of them to worry about.

Good point. Stanford could jump us in a future realignment situation.
I doubt Cal and SMU could, but we would be giving CPR that could be our future rivals for a landing spot. ** Edited by TDVick at 8/24/2023, 4:06:23 AM

ACC is on CPR with the current situation
