Fascinating question. Why have we waited until now for this?
If the schools hang together they might command P2 money. But...
There are so many media players trying to get in on this, not to mention the SEC/B1G tug-o-war, that I think it would be a miracle if the conference remained intact. The selfish interest of some programs will be stimulated by the selfish motives of the outside parties. If Amazon or Apple want to acquire college sports rights they must act now or wait seven years for the B1G to come back around.
With all this going on I think The ACC could receive bids from Amazon/Apple that rival P2 money. But some schools will always feel as though weaker programs in The ACC are holding them back. It will take a very persuasive sales job to keep everyone home and to get a GoR.
Fox and ESPN will not target the conference. They will focus on individual properties; with The B1G trying to build a solid Southern ad footprint, and The SEC trying to maintain their monopoly. There's no way to know for sure, but I think ESPN is much less committed to the monopoly than is The SEC. If, for example, UNC/UVa went to The B1G, ESPN would be just as happy buying those media rights from The B1G rather than The SEC. ESPN will not sacrifice big profits in order to preserve the dreams of The SEC, or The ACC, for that matter. The Southern monopoly is just too expensive.
