The SEC wanted both Texas & Texas A&M long ago

They were the first two choices by Roy Kramer to expand his 10 member SEC weeks before Kramer ever contacted Arkansas & FSU. Texas & Texas A&M both turned Kramer's SEC offer down in 1990. The main reason Texas A&M opposed Texas's entry into the SEC was recruiting. Back in the old SWC conference days. When Texas offered a Texas athlete a scolly, the longhorns got that athlete nearly 100% of the time. Texas A&M rarely beat Texas for an instate athlete back then and Arkansas did maybe once about every three years. Arkansas entering the SEC ended that. Arkansas often then beat the Longhorns on getting Texas athletes. The Aggies were tearing the Longhorns apart on instate athletes once they entered the SEC about 10 years ago. The Aggies entering the SEC hurt Arkansas recruiting in Texas. Football people here predicted that would happen. Texas & Oklahoma entering the SEC will further hurt Arkansas recruiting in those two states. That is just a fact. You might also be referring to what was referred to as a gentleman's agreement. Always just a rumor. It was said to include Florida, South Carolina, Georgia & Kentucky, who would vote together always as a block to prevent FSU, Clemson , Georgia Tech & Louisville from entering the SEC. Again in the interest of protecting their instate football recruiting. It was rumored that Texas A&M had joined those other four in that gentleman's agreement to always block the Longhorn's SEC entry. I also heard it reported that Mike Slive had promised the Texas A&M president a decade ago that Texas would never enter the SEC. So much for Slive's promises and any gentleman's agreements.
