It's not that simple for VT. We are profitable as an athletic dept

We are #18 among all FBS schools in terms of actual profit for athletics (for the schools where they have data). I found a very interesting website (linked below) "that tracks the official balance sheets of public Football Bowl Subdivision university athletic departments". And according to this, in 2020-2021 VT had $90m in overall revenue and $85m in expense for a total profit of $4.7m. What that means for VT is that we are in the black. We don't lose money each year. So it is a very big risk for us to try something that add a lot of debt and puts us in the red. Everyone just looks at the revenue and forgets about the expense side. VT is running a good business financially. That's a hard thing to risk for no guarantee of additional profit or additional wins on the field.
