Given that both schools have similar, or the same, origin story

(aka small land-grant military school) and they have ended up on different paths, then that is why they are perfect for comparison because it would identify all the other factors that influenced the school and/or state government to make the decisions they did at any given time. Based on the research I have done for both schools, it appears that the decisions TAMU made in the early 1900s is what allowed TAMU to end up where it is today. While it appears that VT didn't make those decisions until much later. WRT Lane, you are forgetting that when Stuart Cassell proposed building a larger stadium in 1963 to replace Miles Stadium, the project was going to be done over 4 years (1964-68). So there was no risk of demolishing anything because the original construction would have simply followed a different blueprint. Remember when VT played its first game in 1965 against W&M, only the West Stands and center section of the East Stands were completed at the time. My point is that VT decided in the initial construction to have the East and West Stands be different heights for whatever reason. As a result of that decision, it created unnecessary challenges for any future expansion. Given that initial 4-year project officially cost $3.5 million, I do believe VT could have built either a bowl or have the East and West Stands equal height for the same dollar amount and probably the same capacity of 35,050. If VT had gone that route, then any future expansion probably would have been done differently even if Lane still ended up with the same capacity it is today.

SEC expansion backfiring?
Sunsetunderground 06/06/22 07:47 PM ET
Playoff expansion to 12 is only a matter of a short time.**

WRT the "teach them for being so greedy" statement, did the ACC learn that
VTHokie2000 06/07/22 01:44 PM ET
The Greed in Austin far surpasses
Sunsetunderground 06/07/22 04:24 PM ET
Maybe so, but your OP was focused on the SEC's decisions and greed.
VTHokie2000 06/07/22 04:31 PM ET
Frankly the ACC's greed wasn't for purely financial reasons
EDGEMAN 06/07/22 05:59 PM ET
Or the ACC's greed was still purely financial and it just shows the ACC was
VTHokie2000 06/07/22 06:10 PM ET
Not making VT their #1 or #2 target shows how short sighted they were.
EDGEMAN 06/08/22 08:13 AM ET
What (if anything) does that say about VT since it had been trying for 50
VTHokie2000 06/08/22 09:25 AM ET
With our addition, the ACC was awesome
Truthahn 06/09/22 11:39 AM ET
I'm not sure the ACC had a 50 year history of short sighted behavior
jmanatVT 06/09/22 10:24 AM ET
WRT the ACC adding Georgia Tech, technically Georgia Tech joined in 1979
VTHokie2000 06/09/22 01:44 PM ET
The ACC's decision.....
2hhoop3 06/07/22 09:20 PM ET
Survival or a prolonged death?
VTHokie2000 06/07/22 10:02 PM ET
Survival.....
2hhoop3 06/08/22 11:42 AM ET
It also increases the risk that the ACC will be left holding an empty bag
VTHokie2000 06/08/22 12:04 PM ET
VT was blinded by it's 50 yr fixation on the ACC.
Atlee Hokie 06/14/22 10:17 AM ET
If you are....

VTHokie2000 06/09/22 04:09 PM ET
Lane was built with the east and west stands at the same height
Tailgate Guru 06/13/22 11:13 AM ET
Like I said.....
2hhoop3 06/09/22 09:55 PM ET
I would think the reasons I picked TAMU would be obvious to you.
VTHokie2000 06/10/22 08:25 AM ET
All valid points.....

The Rose Bowl used to be appointment viewing before the BCS and CFP.
Maroon Baboon 06/07/22 12:34 PM ET
I hope the Alliance insists that the Rose be in the first playoff round
Truthahn 06/07/22 01:02 PM ET
if expansion happens no matter what, make the Rose Bowl the permanent site
reestuart 06/07/22 01:07 PM ET
There is no reason for Rose to be permanent Championship site.**
Atlee Hokie 06/14/22 10:28 AM ET
I have my doubts about that
Sunsetunderground 06/07/22 12:32 PM ET
That would be very bad for the P12
EDGEMAN 06/07/22 12:22 PM ET
"Teach them for being so greedy". Remember when we hoped that the ACC

I knew that was a "pipe dream" from the start
EDGEMAN 06/07/22 09:18 AM ET
Maybe if TX could have kept the Longhorn network while in the ACC
Truthahn 06/07/22 10:18 AM ET
I agree with you re TX but aTm is just as bad, if not worse than TX
133193Hokie 06/07/22 10:00 AM ET
yeah, I certainly don't favor aTm over Texas these days. I enjoy watching
reestuart 06/07/22 01:34 PM ET
Even with all that money I think the SEC is going to regret it
Sunsetunderground 06/07/22 09:15 AM ET
And how many schools in SEc are paying mega $$$ to coaches.
Atlee Hokie 06/14/22 10:34 AM ET
Texas is the hot girl........
2hhoop3 06/07/22 09:29 PM ET
Guess what else is going to be causing issues? Scheduling.
Maroon Baboon 06/07/22 10:25 AM ET
TX was THE giant of the Big12 - now they are amongst peers for the most
133193Hokie 06/07/22 09:57 AM ET
The only way to ensure there is turmoil is to keep the playoff...
EDGEMAN 06/07/22 08:19 AM ET
I'd rather have mix of top 4 teams, plus top champions
Truthahn 06/07/22 11:45 AM ET
I don't trust voters when ranking teams
EDGEMAN 06/08/22 12:42 PM ET
Then make it "top 4, then conf champs, max of two per conf, max one indy"
Truthahn 06/09/22 10:07 AM ET
I think the SEC now realizes the playoff structure
Sunsetunderground 06/07/22 09:04 AM ET
Remember its culture amd tx starts it

I've always loved the SEC culture. But their actions, along with ESPN
Maroon Baboon 06/06/22 10:17 PM ET
I've always loved their culture on the surface, but they are rotten...
EDGEMAN 06/07/22 08:21 AM ET
i'd have little interest in VT going to the SEC. ACC is easily the best
reestuart 06/07/22 01:09 PM ET
Don't you have to have a certain academic research membership...
EDGEMAN 06/08/22 04:49 PM ET
Used to. AAU membership was required.
