Lane was built with the east and west stands at the same height

The uppermost sections of the east stands were added during the Dooley years. With the benefit of hindsight, one can argue that Tech would have been better served to use a design with an overhanging upper deck. But beyond being more expensive, getting to 50,000 seats seemed pretty reasonable at the time. Lane's capacity compared well to most of its peers at that time. When I was in school in the 1980s, the only games that filled or came close to filling the stadium were WVU, UVa and Clemson, when those schools brought thousands of visitors. There's an argument that Tech should not have built such a massive box during the west side renovations and, instead, added another deck with more capacity. That would have been my preference. The perception is that luxury boxes generate more revenue, which is a short-sighted goal in my opinion. As for creating a bowl, all that would have ever done is create a lot of bad seats. The SEZ structure was the best way to go. Hopefully something similar will come to the NEZ someday, although doing so would not add a lot in capacity.
