ND supported them to keep the ACC together
The ESPN composition clause requirement of having at least fifteen schools in the conference at all times was the issue.
FSU, Clemson and maybe North Carolina were making noise about leaving, potentially triggering the clause.
ND wanted the ACC to stay together for its own reasons. The main one was protecting football independence.
If ND didn't take care of its own interests, who would ? Every school looks towards taking care of its own interests first.
So, the issue was how to keep the conference together ? Viola........Stanford, Cal and SMU.
Tell me, what other three schools were willing to join the ACC and available at present ?? None, that is who.
Jack Swarbrick graduated from Stanford Law School, so he has a soft spot for that school and wanted to help it.
Cal and SMU were just along for the ride to make up the numbers. That, and they are elite academic schools that fit the profile.
ND was instrumental in getting those three schools into the ACC. Big 12 guy is right, you should thank ND.
Losing three schools without replacements would have threatened the ESPN contract and the ACC may have been toast.

Should ACC & B12 exchange Cal, Stanford, & SMU for WVA, UCF, Cincy? (link)**
