Denial ain't just a river in Egypt.
All these leagues have been about the dolla dolla bills for decades now. Some have just been more successful at getting them. The ACC has had every opportunity to be successful, but nearly every major decision they've made for 15 or so years has been the wrong one. Even things they got right, they took far too long to get there. That's why the premier league in college athletics not too long ago is about to be dismantled. When it comes to the Pac12, I lived out there for a while, college athletics just isn't a big deal out that way. Been that way for decades. And while they've had their struggles, the Big12 has done a fairly decent job of giving their programs money and quality schedules. They've done a much better job of that than the ACC.
The 9 program ACC coulda expanded to 11 and really truly focused on quality football matchups. While it woulda been a regional league, the passion in that league woulda been white hot come November and March. I woulda maybe invited WVU instead of BC. Consider the quality matchups this lineup woulda provided.
ACC N.
WVU
Maryland
VT
UVA
UNC
NC State
ACC S
Wake
Duke
Clemson
GT
FSU
Miami.
You might say, well what's the big deal? Well consider VT's schedule compared to what we've had the last 15 years ago. i'll list the N teams and then three of the six from the south.
WVU, @Maryland, UNC, @NC State, @Miami, Clemson, @ Duke, UVA
That's a dang big difference. And yes, we would have FSU rolling through every couple of years.
These games would bring fans and ratings, which equals passion and money. IMO, it would be THE league in the rapidly growing DC to Miami region.
Basketball would be AWESOME TOO. You could have a home and home with everyone! Getting Duke, UNC, UVA, WVU, Maryland, NC St, etc in Cassell every season would have been great.
Things went to heck when they brought in BC. Awful. I think we coulda landed the Orange Bowl, a great championship game in Charlotte, and even a network with this TWELVE TEAM lineup. Remember, University of Texas landed one on their own. And we'd only be splitting it 12 ways!
And oh...Notre Dame coulda kicked rocks. They don't really fit the culture.
