To me, real rivals will find a way to play each year.
Even in conference realignment moves or division shuffling in-conference, real rivals will find a way to play. Teams have four or so OOC games a year. There is no reason that one of those games can't be used on a long-time rival. To me, the loss of major rivalry games over the past several decades is a crying shame. OU-Nebraska, Texas-Texas A&M, even Kansas-Mizzou and Pitt-WVU.
Also, while Miami-VT is not each other's number one rival, it was a great series nonetheless (spanning 33 consecutive years and surviving conference moves, often with much on the line). Over three decades, and the ACC suits threw it away like a broken lamp.
I also wanted to maintain our series with GT--I loved the Techmo Bowl--we built this game up since coming to the ACC. It was the best series of an old-order ACC team and post-2003 ACC addition that didn't exist before. It was a cool game.
And if you look at GT's, Miami's and VT's new permanent "rivals", the ACC really screwed all three. It just went to show me yet again that the ACC has lightweights in high places who don't understand why people watch and love college football.
