While relegation/promotion has never been tried in the US, college

football is ripe to try it for a whole host of reasons. The main reason being that there are already so many established schools with a following. Combine that with a de-facto, but imperfect tier system that the TV networks have unwittingly created. In other words, there are about 130 D1 programs right now that could easily be made into about 5 tiers. And college football has always had something great that most other pro US sports leagues don't have: and that is a GREAT and highly relevant regular season. That's what the PL has. And I think it would work in college football (but as a side note, I'd divide the country in two in some way such as East and west, and have those two play a one game playoff for the national championship. It would rank up there with the Super Bowl). And when you have 130 fairly well-known brands with pedigree, all having the chance to move up or down, it would create massive interest. OTOH, if you think about the MLS. It is not respected by the rest of the world, including Americans who appreciate world club soccer, mainly because the clubs are franchises and the league has no relegation and promotion, and the clubs have no pedigree. It is an unauthentic top-down creation, and relegation and promotion is a non-starter because there is nothing under it. They run it like an American sports franchise league, not a world soccer tiered league.
