Unfortunately, I think you are right, not only for VT, but for the
entirety of the B12, and most of the ACC. Let me explain.
Do a search on Kent States OOC schedule the last few years, and those coming up. Now, I'm not comparing the B12 and most of the ACC to Kent State, but the OOC schedule for those that dare could be the difference.
Kent state gets those buy games against the creme de la creme for survival, not to bolster their SOS. Schools like VT, or (pick a sell out stadium in the B12) do not schedule those "payday" games because their home games are worth too much money. VT and many in the B12 schedule 1 and 1's against other P4 teams because of the money and home games, not for the paycheck.
lets be real though. Hou many times does a VT or B12 school schedule a home and home with Michigan, OSU, or a top SEC school (a blue blood if you will)? Every once in a while, but not often.
Now, what if VT scheduled an away game with Tennessee, Oregon, and Oklahoma without a return home game? Of course they would lose money because the OOC home games make millions more that the 2M they would receive from playing on the road without a reciprocal game - so it never happens that way. We all under stand that.
What would happen though if a K-State played an OOC schedule like that 3 or 4 years in a row, and actually wone better than half of them? They would be ranked a lot more, and would have a much better chance of an at large bid if they didn't win the conference. Make no mistake, winning the conference is the goal here, not at at large bid.
Going 1-2 with OOC schedule like Kent States (honestly, look at their OOC schedule), would put your team against the best in the nation, and does nothing to prevent you from winning your conference - if anything, it helps across the board, because recruits like playing in those games, and those games would get good ratings.
The problem is that you lose hosting 2 home games a year, and that is almost impossible with the fan base, and of course, the money.
It would be easier for VT to schedule an away game with OSU, Michigan or any other brand or blue blood, than it would to get the 1 and 1, and have those teams come to Lane.
Sipping the Canadian whiskey tonight, so wth, I'll put it out there.
