Why can't a school do both? A school can address its concerns privately

and still issue a neutral statement to let the fan base know it has done something. The statement doesn't have to provide any details and a standard neutral response could be used if any questions are raised during an interview. Whereas if a school does not issue some sort of public statement, then the school is letting the public form its own opinion which may make it difficult to win the PR war on this issue and/or other issues.
