They need programming

Every network must provide X number of hours per week of original programming to their affiliates, and with the writers and now actors going on strike, their will be less shows in the pipeline for the upcoming season. The CW saw an way to provide that programming with a small sports contract where Raycom picks up the production costs and CW gets the programming. It is similar to the "FOX Plan". FOX was basically The CW back in the 80's until they picked up the NFL, then the NHL, then MLB, and finally NASCAR in 2001. FOX went from a "netlet" to a full blown network in a few years. Now, the ACC isn't the NFL, but it's a way for The CW to get its feet wet in sports programming. As for The CW's CEO's thinking, he is getting 150ish hours of programming for a bargain, and he is able to now create a pre and post game show that The CW will reap the profits from, and give them a network "star" like a Suzy Kolber that could possibly host the shows.
