Does it really buy any time though? As I noted in my response below, teams

appear to be unable to play their way onto the list of 3. If a team (i.e. Wake or BC) gets its act together and its football is performing at a Clemson-like level, then what is its reward? There is a possibility that ESPN won't see much of a change in their ratings because the national audience really doesn't care about the program. As a result, they won't get to play Notre Dame or the other 3 top tier programs more frequently because their ratings don't support making the change. What (if any) has Wake/BC really gained by making the investment and improving its football program to a high level?
