Nothing wrong with unions
I've been on the other side from them where I worked one time. They represented those employees well. As with anything, there will be some changes if the athletes are able to unionize. It won't be separate unions for each sport, there will be one union representing all the athletes. The athletes will want to set a minimum of compensation/benefits, in exchange for that, the athletic departments will want to set maximum compensation/benefits limits. Thus, all NIL money could be subject to being pooled together so that Olivia Dunn will be making a lot less while the 3rd string kicker will be making more money because as part of the CBA, the athletes' NIL could be owned by the schools.
Also, the transfer portal could get shut down, and players could actually be traded to other schools. Bama might need a running back that Kansas has, so they trade a couple of linemen or even a basketball player for him.
Let's not forget the scholarships, housing, and meals that the athletes receive now. Those will now need to be paid by somebody, and those somebodies will be the athletes themselves. The NBA, NFL, NHL, MLB, and other leagues don't pay for food, housing, or education except for when the team travels.
Also, who will this union be negotiating with? Individual schools? Individual states? Individual conferences? Or the NCAA? Currently, the pro leagues have a union that negotiates their CBA with their league so that each team is bound by the CBA. If their isn't a CBA with "College Sports, Inc", then it will be a hodgepodge of agreements with unequal terms.
