2 reasons. Led by Clemson, they were furious about the anti bowl sentiment VPI espoused. Also, for a few years leading up 1953, VT had been really, really poor at football. We just sucked. Interestingly, Virginia which was an independent at that time, having quit the Southern Conference several years before, had several really strong years during and right after WWII. Ironically, shortly after joining the ACC, Virginia began to de-emphasize football.
