Mandel at the Athletic, while admittedly a pencil neck who is usually wrong

about almost everything, believes the entire conference model is going to implode directly. Since I know most don't pay for The Athletic, and it's not worth paying for anyway, here's the part pertinent to this discussion: "I believe the traditional conference model in football will crumble by the early 2030s. It’s already too unwieldy, and the revenue-sharing era will expose the chasms within conferences between schools that can afford to compete at the highest level and those that can’t. Len Perna, ringleader of the group spearheading a proposed FBS Super League, told me late last year they were targeting 2032. It might not be that exact model, but it will be something that generates even more money and makes more sense geographically." You're always going on about how ESPN and FOX are behind everything and are pulling everyone's strings behind the scenes. If that's actually true, then I imagine something, if not exactly like, relatively like Len Perna's idea is what's ultimately going to win out, because his entire career has been spent in pro sports and the related broadcasting, law, licensing, sales, and marketing. Since Mandel thinks it will happen, it almost definitely won't, but I'll link to the details of Perna's plans below anyway for you to read, if you haven't already.

Interesting but the idea of 70 teams at the top level

One of the major points of the article was that the people that-

This guy is "Big Media." "Big Media" put the plan together.

Yeah and I think anything that says 70 teams will be in the top level
VTCALS72 03/07/25 12:40 PM ET
The "pro model" started with 8 teams, man.

70 works, if distributions are on a sliding scale

Make the last 2 GT and WVU and this would be a great football league.

I want round robin leagues back.
Maroon Baboon 03/06/25 03:06 PM ET
I’m opposite. I find round robin to be repetitive and boring

The ACC in the FSU-domination years was an anomaly.
Maroon Baboon 03/07/25 01:07 AM ET
ACC division schedule was the worst. Very much agree on that **
HokieAl 03/07/25 08:13 AM ET
Truth. And then they screwed us even harder with the 3-5-5 schedule.
Maroon Baboon 03/07/25 09:25 AM ET
and the fact that we played FSU and Clemson so few times. Just horrible**
HokieAl 03/07/25 09:31 AM ET
Round robin 10-team divisions in 20 team leagues absolutely could happen.
hokieZ71 03/06/25 06:16 PM ET
If you are going to bring back the Pac-10, then why not the Pac-8?
VTHokie2000 03/06/25 06:14 PM ET
9 conference games better than 7. **
Maroon Baboon 03/06/25 07:01 PM ET
7 conferences would allow for 4 OOC games + 1 neutral site OOC games.

Ah, in antiquis diebus, when college football was the best**
Baltimore_Hokie 03/06/25 04:55 PM ET
I think that is coming for the level of the ACC/B12 and PAC.
