To get others to vote for it, the media contract distribution
would probably have to remain the same, as all the institutions will have to budget. The newfound playoff money however, is different. As is the post season money contributions in the NCAA tournament.
Each member of the ACC is projected to receive about $13M more per year from the playoff money. That is about $221M additional for the conference starting next year.
What I would like the B12 to do, is disperse 1/2 that amount as a guarantee every year, and use the other 1/2 of that amount to disperse to the schools that out perform in what ever metric that the conference determines. For instance, if it's winner take all, and only one team qualifies for the playoffs, they get about $110M for that year.
Of course that is ridiculous, but if you use that as the starting point, it isn't a stretch to get to $25M additional per year for the playoff qualifiers. That also leaves a LOT of money left over for all of the other sports, or other metrics that might be used.
The existing members that do not qualify continue to get the media contract payout, AND more revenue from the bump in playoff money. You could also very easily separate basketball, and simply let the teams that qualify for the tournament keep 1/2 of the unit payouts, with the rest being dispersed as they always have been. Same thing with the Bowls, let the schools keep at least 1/2 of the additional revenue.
As 2hhoop3 mentioned in an earlier post, you want to incentivize all conference members to improve their football, and other parts of their athletic departments that bring value to the conference, whether directly, or indirectly. There are many metrics that could be discussed, especially for national championships in all sports.
The idea that everyone gets a trophy just because they are there needs to be set aside, especially for the smaller private schools that will never get the national following drive the media numbers. They still however, have an opportunity to be competitive at a high level, and lose nothing.
Both the ACC and B12 should seriously consider a move like that. If the ACC did that, but the B12 didn't, then, and only then, does it make sense to change conferences (assuming the media money is about the same).
