How do you estimate living alumni size?

I see that WF has a living alumni size of ~9X of their current students, UVA has 10.5X the number of current students, Northwestern has a living alumni size of 11.4X their current students, but VT has a living alumni size of only 7X the number of current students. Question: are VT alumni dying off at a much higher rate than those other schools?
