Me thinks he doth protest too much.

His bagmen have been paying athletes under the table for years, just like the rest of college football. Reminiscent of the scene in Casablanca when the police chief (Renault) shuts down Rick's cafe telling him, Renault: I'm shocked, shocked to find that gambling is going on in here! [a croupier hands Renault a pile of money] Croupier: Your winnings, sir. Renault: Oh, thank you very much.
