The speed camera thread got me thinking of the Cannonball Run. Pretty good
movie for me at that age when it came out, but the Cannonball Run was also real. And I wondered if people were still doing it. Mindbogglingly, the answer is yes. I have no idea how they get away with it, but I found this mindboggli-isimo fact of the matter: The traditional route runs from New York City’s Red Ball Garage to the Portofino Hotel in Redondo Beach, California, covering approximately 2,813 miles. Current record-holders for the modern unsanctioned run are Arne Toman, Douglas Tabbutt, and spotter Dunadel Daryoush, who completed the trip in 25 hours and 39 minutes in May 2020. They drove a modified 2016 Audi S6 disguised as a Ford Police Interceptor, achieving an average speed of 112 mph (180 km/h) and a top speed of 175 mph (282 km/h) while utilizing advanced evasion tactics like thermal cameras and laser jammers.
