I am debating on building a house, but afraid the stress maybe too much
especially since I have a sick wife. We have 43 acres on the water with 560 waterfront and a nice point that I can build a house with a 270 degree water view and every room having a view of the water.
Everyone I talked that has built a home says it is way too stressful and would not do it again. I would make it turn key with a contractor septic, well, site prep, and a stick build.
If you built a house, would you do it again? I am 64 and wife is 67. Wife is just in love with property, but I may just buy a house in Deltaville, Kilmarnock, Reedville area.

To consider when building. They do a good job of showing videos with examples so it’s good for those who can’t visualize….

If you have the money to comfortably build it, you have a pleasant place to live indefinitely while it is being built, and your wife is on board, I would go for it. You are going to have some hiccups, sure, but just brace yourselves for the inevitabilities going in. You will likely have regrets if you don't do it, and endless satisfaction if it all works out, which it almost certainly will if you pick a reputable builder. Even if you have the cash, I would consider getting a bigger bank (like BOA) that has a good construction loan department to finance it. They have the experience to only allow draws in stages, and to their satisfaction, before the builder gets more money to continue the project. They will oversee everything so you don't have to.

as "a person of wealth". She inherited millions when her mother passed. She found an amazing, private gated community in Belmont NC and searched for the most reputable single family home architect and builder. She commenced upon a nearly 3-year project to work closely to have her team design and build an 8000sf home on a wooded lot with expansive views of the lake the community surrounds. She's 74 now, lives there alone.

college, so that's why I threw that part in there. I saw how beneficial it is to have them handle the draws, particularly if the future homeowner has never done anything like that before (and who has?). You have to hold the builder accountable every step of the way, and they do that for a living.
