SIR. RIP Luther K. Brice, Jr.. a fine gentleman and Scholar. Frequently
known as “ Take it Twice Brice” after a student wrote on the blackboard after a final exam “it’s nice to take it twice or even thrice from Brice.” He enjoyed teaching and requested teaching freshmen Chem and was thought provoking and entertaining with a dry sense of humor. Taught at VT for 32 yrs. Passed April 2 @98 yrs of age.

My dad also had him when Brice was young. My dad kept his Brice notes with him throughout his professional career (ChemE)

had a great time with "half-acid (half-assed) solutions") Remember all the rumors that he co invented napalm and was working for $1 a year at VT 😉

I was taking Honors Chem Freshman year and floundering. He requested we have a talk and he told me I was performing below what i could do. He also took several us to Claytor Lake to learn sailing. Great professor who was strict but fun. Many will remember his 1812 overature titration fun at the end of the quarter.

Sadly, the video is from by Stanford Chem not by VT. Brice published the methodology and I gather it takes a couple of hours to set up the solutions.

honors chem. He was one of the last grad students the last living student of Friedrich August Kekulé, who discovered the structure of the benzene ring and started structural chemistry. Sticks and balls anyone? Brice looked at his students as progeny of the greats.

most of that lot. Ralph was 92 when he passed three years ago.
