Washington & Lee (1958) left the conference to deemphasize athletics. Earlier departures included Tennessee, Georgia, Alabama, Auburn, Georgia Tech, Kentucky, and Mississippi State, who left to form the SEC in 1933. UVA left in 1937 to become independent. Maryland, NCSU, UNC and Clemson left to form the ACC in 1953.
