ding, ding, ding, correct!
Many readers thought that the comic version of Batson D. Belfry looked like a blend of Tip O’Neill and Ted Kennedy. I think he looks a lot more like O’Neill than Kennedy. Shoe was originally written by Jeff MacNelly, who won a Pulitzer Prize while an artist for the Richmond News Leader. After the Pulitzer, he worked for the Chicago Tribune. After JM's death, his widow, Susie MacNelly and his former Richmond colleague, Gary Brookins, continued to publish the comic strip.

Rare trivia win for me due to combination of factors
I usually don't get a chance to look at this board before somebody else chimes in with correct answer. And this particular question was specifically within my wheelhouse. "Shoe" was one of my favorite cartoons -- probably because my dad liked it a lot as well and it was one of those goofy things (like baseball) that was a bonding experience for us when I was a kid. Thanks very much for a nice bit of nostalgia, lilhokie525. I think I just might call my dad now.
