When I was in Honfleur in 2014, my tour group was told that buildings were taxed according to the size of their windows. Whether this was true of the city, the region of Normandy, or all of France, I don't know.

Seems like a pretty arbitrary metric for taxation. The Big Brick lobbyists must have greased some palms.

you still see the bricked windows
i lived in Richmond-Upon-Thames, sister city of Richmond Va btw. Lots of old buildings in that town with bricked windows to this day
