Smoker advice from the Lounge: Pellet vs Gravity Charcoal
So my wife has decided I should get a new smoker for father's day / my birthday. I've been looking around for a while and THINK I've zoned in on the following:
- Campchef Woodwind 36" with the Sidekick BBQ box
or
- Chargriller 980 Gravity fed charcoal smoker.
Charcoal grill is cheaper up-front and imparts more smoke.
Pellet can do longer smokes, has cheaper fuel, and, with the sidekick, can do a lot more.
Both have wifi controllers and are fairly well regarded. At this point I'm not interested in the Egg option. I have a griddle and a bullet smoker. CC has a 24" smoker that's a few hundred cheaper, but I'd prefer at least a 30" grill.
Thoughts? Other recommendations? I'd like to keep wifi and ~$1500 or less.

son in law have Traeger pellet grills and love them. My son smokes a butt often.

I've got the RT-2500 BFG. We entertain a lot, so the large one makes sense for us. Here's a pic of it on my back porch. Put a brisket on at 1am this morning actually. Well, my wife did. I was asleep.
Customer service is top notch. Warranty is great. Mine came with a 6 year warranty. Although, I think the smaller models come with a less warranty. Wi-Fi equipped. I can view meat temps and control it from my office at work. Had it for a little over a year, and I haven't had any issues with it maintaining steady temperature, regardless of the time of year.

I hate the bull horns though. I know that's a selling point for many, but it's cheesy to me. That said, I like the mid-sized Req, but might be above my wife's budget...

Their ownership is great and support is phenomenal. The grill was rock solid as well. Temps were really dialed in, especially compared to some of the big brand name pellet grills.

Doesn't really make sense to fire up the huge smoker if we are doing something small.
