Many years ago my Dad and I were umpiring a high school game at Rich...

Valley HS. They were playing Holston HS. I was behind the plate and Dad was on the bases. Similar situation. Bottom of the 7th, runners at 1st and 3rd with 2 outs for RV. Holston leading 6-5 in what had been a pretty good game. Batter hits a hard grounder to the Cavalier SS...he causally flips it to the 2nd baseman for the force out, except he was 2 feet off the bag, ergo he was safe. Holston starts to celebrate, the runner from 3rd scores and the runner from 1st keeps on truckin'. He scores. The 1st base coach for RV wisely holds the batter at 1st base. Dad and I signal the game is over, RV wins. Holston still is unaware with what happened. Finally the Holston coaches look and see RV won the game...how did that happen...so the Holston coach runs over to me and asked was it not the 3rd out at the force out at second. My Dad says no your 2nd baseman was way off the bag, the runner was safe and the 2 runners scored. He was livid and the 2nd baseman came over and said well I was in the area. The Holston coach just accepted defeat and walked off the field. This was at a time when the pros just had to be in the vicinity for a force out except at 1st. Kids would see that on Saturday afternoon baseball on NBC with Curt Gowdy and Tony Kubek and figured it was OK to do.

When playing baseball, don't celebrate your win too early.
