Bring him/her home and just hang out for as long as it takes for something
to become obvious. For our current dog, we spent the ride home from picking him up (about an hour) thinking of good names, most tied to his coloration (all black as a pup, with a white diamond patch on his chest).
We got him home, put him on the through and he immediately walked over and started gnawing on a shoe. My daughter exclaims "We should call him Chewy!" and there you go.
