Hawaii recommendations needed

Will be spending four days on Oahu and four on Maui in late February. Looking to stay in one location on each island and do day trips. What areas would you recommend I focus on for lodging, and which should I avoid? Also would prefer a place with at least a minimal kitchen. Better to look at Airbnb/VRBO, or are there hotels that would fit the bill? If there are specific places you've stayed that you really liked, let's hear it.

Oahu has a lot of mixed use condo/hotel places. So you can get a kitchen

If you snorkel, wear a wet suit. Box jellyfish can eff up a vacation. **
